Outreach and End of Week Round -Up

Friday 12th October

Wednesday and Thursday this week have just been absolutely amazing - just what I needed after a tough start to the week.

Outreach on Thursday was something a bit different - Shei wanted to try something new and it was so much fun!
We were split into 2 teams and our task was to make a 1-2 minute video on what it's like to be a volunteer here. Shei wanted to break the stereotype that it's scary and all hard hard work and that kind of thing. We could go to any of the outreach projects we wanted and the rest was left to us! Our team was me, Bailey and Tora and Shei came with us, then it was Corrie, Stephanie and Jennifer and Dan was with them. We went to Bailey's clinic first to get some shots of him and Doctor George - he's such a nice guy, very funny - and then we went to Corrie's school, where we went last week. The other group was already there and we just played with the kids and filmed a little bit of stuff but basically just had an hour and a bit having a great time!
It was amazing, some of the kids recognized me from last week and remembered my name and came and gave me a massive hug, it was the loveliest thing. It was so fun, we played a load of circle games and then just ran around, giving piggy backs and spinning kids round and stuff - so good! The kids loved it and had a great time waring us all out - they were mesmerised by our hair and were happy playing with that when we sat in the shade for a time out! Was a great day :)

This is our lil video

And this is the other group's!

Gladways is an amazing school!

Today was back to Dada's - was a fairly successful day I think! Taught a Class 4 English lesson on tenses, they seemed to get it and I knew a bunch of them from Wednesday which was nice. I'm so glad I went in on the day off, now a load of kids from all different classes recognize me and smile and wave or shout my name and stuff, it's really lovely, made my day!

I managed to get a few small groups to tutor too - both from Class 6, 3 kids for a maths session and 2 for an English one. I actually really enjoyed it! The maths one was good, we went though some questions together and then I was making up questions for them to practice on the mini whiteboards I brought. Good stuff! The English was a little more challenging, I only knew that they were a bit behind the class, Felix asked me to practice tenses with them and they just found it really difficult. They seemed to struggle with it quite a bit - the thing with english is it can be taught in so many different ways and its a hard kanguage to grasp, so many nuances and exceptions to every rule! I tried to adapt my approach a little but the session was cut a bit short so I don't feel like we really had chance to get into it this time, I was mostly just trying to gauge where they were at ability/understanding-wise. It's another one that gets my head swirling. This is definitely the stuff I want to be doing more of, just giving those kids who need it that little bit of extra support academically and emotionally, that's the stuff that matters to me, as well as just having a great time with them all!

This evening we shared the cooking of tea too (I always confuse everyone here when i say that - I mean dinner not the drink!). I was in charge of gutting and juicing the passion fruit for the orange and passion fruit juice we made, no electric juicers or whisks in this house! It was good fun in the kitchen and everyone came to sit round the table and we were all chatting and laughing, super lovely, wholesome volunteer-family time. My last night with Bailey too before he leaves coz I'll be on safari, imma miss him! #volunteerlife, making friends super quick and then having to say goodbye....it'll be my turn to go in no time...!

Just finished packing my rucksack for the Maasai Mara excursion this weekend - possibly radio silence till Tuesday but I'll let you know all about it when I get back!!

Love to everyone back home, as always - 2 weeks feels like forever and only seconds all at once! Halfway through my time here already, can't believe it! xxx
