Zip-lining in the Aberdares Valley

I've officially been in Kenya for 1 whole week!!
It feels like it's gone so quickly but also like I've been here forever... Can't quite believe it

Today was our zip lining excursion - I forgot how much I love outdoor pursuits ! Hiking, biking, climbing, ziplining, I just love it so much! Especially when you're somewhere where the landscape around you is just so amazing, flying over a waterfall, forests and the occasional elephant! (I missed it but apparently there was one there)



Well worth it, we did a total of 6 ziplines all across the hills and it was epic! You could see for miles at the top it was gorgeous and green, made me think of the Peaks back home.
Me, Jennifer, Tora, Stephanie, Yvonne and Izzo went today and we had a lot of fun. Izzo has been a few times and really loves it, he started a bet at the the beginning that whoever didn't make it to the end of the zip line the most times has to buy everyone drinks! I made it to the platform every time (yusssss) Yvonne missed 3, Tora 3, Stephanie 3 and Jennifer and Izzo missed 2 - they had to pull themselves along to get to the platform those times! Looks like those 3 owe everyone a drink!


It was so exhilarating, I was actually surprisingly good at it too - I must've just got the technique right! On my first go one of our guides, Joseph, asked me how many years I'd been doing this, I've never been on ziplines this big before! My only experience was on the one in Centre Parcs however many years ago, it was kinda nice they were so impressed with my ziplining skills.
On the second one too, and after the last one, he was joking with me saying if I've finished my studies I should come and be an instructor there! Haha, it was was great. Reminded me of when I did my NCS course too, one of the guys there that was our leader on a lot of our activities was saying I should be an instructor for some kind of outdoor pursuits company - good ol' Steve :) I'd forgotten all about it but I do love that kind of thing, imagine that as a job! Madness, such a good day - all the sun and happy hormones and adrenalin have left me feeling great!

Joseph and Francis, our.instrucotrs, were brill. Showing off when they went down the line, going headfirst backwards or spinning around, Joseph would wobble the line when Francis was coming too and slow him down and get stuck before the platform or make him bounce about, fun guys.
Izzo and Yvonne were great company too, we all had a lot of fun together and hopefully got some good pictures and videos! I've been teaching Yvonne how to floss - the silly dance move that's going round at the minute - and at one point we were stood  on the hillside just doing the floss while we were waiting, fun times.

Yvonne was super excited for lunch afterwards too, she was raving about the food yesterday and I was not disappointed! It was a buffet-style dealio with salad (yay vegetables!), different rices, curry and barbeque meats - it was soooooo good. A proper trip where you leave feeling full and fulfilled :) 

I had the chicken - it was delicious, and fresh fruit for pudding! Yummmmm.

Got home mid-afternoon and just ran some errands - after such an amazing morning I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about everything that's happened this week and everything I've experienced. And I'm just exhausted by it all too I think! Gonna try and have an early night, got a busy brain - rollercoaster of emotions for sure.

(Sidenote: might try and format these blogs differently - not sure how yet but make it less of an essay for you guys read! 😅 Maybe shorten to standout moments, reflections...I'm not sure - but just letting you know!)

    What a fab day - you didn't mention hitting the platform everytime! Like you say must be all the CentrePark experience with Mum, Grannie and Grandpa ;-) Lovely to chat tonight - like your idea on blogs but I like an essay too! Saturday 27th October My time here is coming to a close, I’ve definitely had an unforgettable experience and through all the ups and downs I’m so glad I took myself (very far!) out of my comfort zone and came to this amazing place - what a month it has been! Another Friend Leaves

Saturday 20th October  Time is a fickle friend - feels like Jen has been here forever and for no time at all and all of a sudden, she's in the car on the way to the airport. I'm gonna miss her a whole lot!  As for Friday, I had frustrating end to a frustrating week! Had a good hour at the start of the day with my class 6 maths group, working through some questions with them and things... and that's about it! The other classes were either doing an exam or Kiswahili so I was of no use, so me and Felix chilled together in the staffroom and he was challenging me to work out maths problems from the textbook - i think he was surprised by my maths skills! (I was too!) Whilst it was a bit of fun, it's not quite what I want to be doing with my time whilst I'm here! Night Out in Kenya

Wednesday 3rd October If there's one thing I'm learning about the Kenyan way of life, it's that they do everything in their own time! No rush, just do whatever, it'll be fiiiiiiiine - it's slightly infuriating for a stresshead like me but it is funny, and something I need to get better at so I'm trying to embrace it!  For example, we were going to go out to the karaoke together just down the road - but by 10pm the Kenyans were only just back from their Wednesday prayer they go to together and we had all sort of lost enthusiasm for the idea! Also the others had made plans to go to Nairobi instead so that one went out the window. When they got back though we spent a few hours in the bar behind the house, playing pool, darts, cards, loud music and of course, they started hitting the alcohol!
